The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. It primarily addresses global challenges related to disarmament, international security threats, and the regulation of armaments. DISEC works closely with bodies such as the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs(UNODA) to develop recommendations and to foster international consensus on disarmament issues. While it does not directly enforce policies, its resolutions help shape global norms and encourage cooperation among states.
DISEC’s agenda includes a wide range of critical security topics, including nuclear non-proliferation, illicit trade in small arms and light weapons, international conflict prevention, and cybersecurity threats. With growing concern over emerging technologies and hybrid warfare, DISEC also explores norms around autonomous weapons, cyberwarfare, and the militarization of space. Its role in providing platforms for diplomatic dialogue is vital, especially in a fragmented global security landscape where innovative solutions are increasingly necessary.
